I’ve always found it a completely counter intuitive way for my body to behave, yet when I get my period, I’m horny as hell.

It’s a baffling, as that time of the month is a very unsexy few days for me. I’m crampy, cranky and so bloated – I usually feel as though I’m going to give birth to a small dugong. Yet despite all of this, I want nothing more than to hump my brains out whilst eating something deep fried and smothered in chocolate.

If I’m not able to have sex around this time, I generally end up masturbating like a fiend. And as someone who doesn’t dream all that often, during the nights of my period I frequently have vivid sex dreams and wake up very sweaty and wetty in the underpants region.

I would have thought that even from a biological perspective it makes zero sense to feel randy during your monthly bleed, as the chances of conceiving are extremely low.
(Babies can still happen though ladies – those little tadpoles can be persistent and hang around up there for up to 5 days, so you still need to use contraception…)

It’s Progesterone’s Fault

While there doesn’t seem to be a confirmed concrete scientific reason for why a high libido coincides with having your period, the most popular explanation is that it’s due to a shift in your levels of progesterone.

Progesterone is said to lower a woman’s libido, and thus the lower the levels, the hornier you get and the more you are going to crave sex.

The little hormonal suckers are at their lowest on day 28 of your menstrual cycle. I say ‘Day 28’ as the average length of a menstrual cycle is 28 days, however every woman’s cycle is varied and it’s completely normal for it to range anywhere from 24 to 37 days.

…And Your Sex Hormones

Coincidentally, at this time your sex hormones testosterone and estradiol are at their peak. Testosterone you say? Yes, despite testosterone being associated with men and seen as a man’s hormone, you have some in your body too and it’s making you want to share your love muffin.

Plus, You’re Pre-lubricated

Aside from the hormonal changes, there are also some other interesting theories out there to explain your sex drive going haywire during shark week. It’s said that during pre-period discharge process when the uterine lining is starts to shed, all the extra moisture and additional wetness down there makes you feel more sensitive and aroused.

Also, the additional water you’re retaining in your pelvic region during this time is said to place more pressure on your G-spot, heightening its sensitivity to pressure. It could even make achieving orgasm easier (cha-ching!)

I also have my own supplementary theory as to why I seem to be randiest whilst on my rags*, and it is entirely psychological. It seems like the thing I shouldn’t want when I’m bleeding from my nether regions. Like a child who doesn’t want a toy until it’s taken away from them and they can’t have it anymore. I’m that kid, and sex is the toy.

Do you feel horny on your period?

*I find ‘on the rag’ to be the least appealing period term available, and yet I wanted to give you some nice alliteration to go with ‘randiest’ so used it anyway. You’re welcome.
